A safe, welcoming space where you can slow down, talk openly and explore what you need.

My counselling approach

At Brenda Nortje Counselling, I believe you deserve a space where you can simply be yourself — without judgement or pressure. I take the time to listen, understand your story and recognize the strengths you already carry. I meet you where you're at. Together, we can make sense of what you’re going through and explore what might help, at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

A safe and accepting space

I create a space where you can truly be yourself, fostering trust and encouraging open communication without fear of judgement.

Working together

Your counselling journey is unique. We work together, drawing on various evidence-informed therapies to meet your specific needs and goals. You are in charge.

Finding your own way

My role is to walk alongside you, supporting you in developing insights, managing emotions, and finding your own meaningful path forward.

How I can support you

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Counselling can support you through many different challenges and life experiences.

I can support you with:

* Anxiety, stress and feeling overwhelmed                                                          * Depression and low mood

* Grief, loss and life changes                                                                                 * Trauma and difficult experiences

* Abuse, domestic violence and violence                                                            * Anger and emotional regulation

* Bullying                                                                                                                   * Relationships and couples counselling

* Identity and self-understanding                                                                         * Life transitions, goals and building life skills

* Work-related challenges                                                                                     * Mental health and wellbeing

* Ageing and older persons' mental health                                                        * Maternal mental health

* Spirituality and meaning                                                                                    * Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

* Immigration related challenges

You don’t have to see your experience on a list to know that you’re struggling. If something is affecting your wellbeing, relationships or ability to cope, you’re welcome to reach out and we can explore together whether counselling might be helpful.

Culture, identity and connection

I recognize that our culture, identity, family, relationships and communities all shape who we are and how we experience the world. My practice is culturally responsive and grounded in respect, curiosity and a willingness to listen and learn. Where appropriate, I draw on holistic frameworks such as Te Whare Tapa Whā and Fonofale, alongside the Māori concept of Tihei-wā mauri ora, to support a deeper understanding of wellbeing, connection and the whole person. I don’t assume that one cultural perspective or framework will fit everyone. Instead, I invite you to share what is meaningful to you, so our work together feels safe, respectful and relevant to who you are.
